WHY ORGANIC COTTON?
A few years ago, some independent thinking, environmentally concerned cotton farmers started asking themselves some serious questions about the methods of conventional cotton farming. After years of intensive pesticide and herbicide use, they could no longer ignore the negative effects these chemicals were having on the environment. The grim reality is that over 20 million pounds of chemicals are sprayed on conventional cotton crops annually. Many of these chemicals seep into our ground water, or form a toxic runoff endangering our rivers and streams. The organic cotton farmers are converting back to methods used before all these high tech chemical compounds were available. Old techniques like crop rotation, and reintroduction of predator insects like ladybugs and spiders are again proving viable. POURQUOI COTON BIOLOGIQUE?
Il y a quelques années, des fermiers américains, spécialisés dans la culture du coton, se sont posé de sérieuses questions quant à la manière de faire de la culture intensive, sans pour cela nuire à l'environnement. Après des années d'utilisation de pesticides et herbicides en très grande quantité ces professionnels ne pouvaient rester très longtemps ignorants de leurs effets néfastes sur notre environnement. Avec plus de 10 tonnes de produits chimiques et d'engrais consommés chaque année on pouvait obtenir une récolte de coton florissante sans maladie de la fleur ni insectes nuisibles, mais une très grande partie de ces produits chimiques s'infiltrent en profondeurs dans les nappes phréatiques. Les producteurs de coton qui utilisaient des composants chimiques de haute technologie sont revenus à des méthodes de production jadis appliquées. Ces anciennes techniques consistent à faire des récoltes en alternance en réintroduisant des insectes tels que les coccinelles et les araignées. Le coton n'en n'est que de meilleure qualité.
